Why else do you think that a long day of chores can be characterized by loud music playing throughout the house? Music helps us ignore the fact that many of the activities that we’re doing – whether it be homework, chores, or driving – are boring. Music adds fun to your lifeĪside from helping me uplift my spirit and deal with the difficulties of life, music simply adds fun to my day to day activities. When music isn’t helping me improve my mood, it helps me grapple with some of the problems that I deal with, hearing a really poignant line in a song about something that I’m going through can really help me think about that problem in new ways (or at least feel like I’m not the only one experiencing the problem). Finding a song or project that I connect with can help me bring up my mood or give me that ounce of motivation that I need to finish whatever I’m working on.

One of my favorite things about Thursday nights is finding out that an artist I like has released a new song or album, turning on the multicolored lights in my room, connecting my phone to my Bluetooth speaker, and just listening to the project from start to finish. Yet, when you look at what is actually required to make music, whether it be classical, pop, rock, rap, or even country, you’ll find that a high level of both creativity and sheer technical ability are required. We often forget the fact that music is an art form (even though we routinely refer to musicians as artists), and usually when we talk about music as an art form we talk about classical music. So I thought I’d take a look at why I keep posting about music week after week. Normally I would post about some new music that’s been released, but nothing super interesting to me has come out over the past week. The features only make the album even better, and help to make the album stand as one of the best cohesive projects of the year.
Whether it’s in the bars being dropped in Jay2’s excellent verse in Z4L, or Ravyn Lenae’s hypnotizing voice in MF GROOVE. The outstanding vocal work on display is accented by the features. These verses are highlighted by Smino’s singing, which is both integrated into the versus themselves as well as standalone choruses. The flows on display remain pristine throughout the album, and the use of clever metaphors across the entire album demonstrate that Smino is not to be dismissed as a rapper.
In addition to creating superb instrumentals, NOIR continues to shine in the vocals department. Louis artist has practically trademarked for himself. From Monte Booker to KAYTRANADA to Smino himself, the drums combine with ethereal keyboards and sublime basslines to create a laid back vibe that the St. NOIR arrives with some of the same producers he’s worked with in the past, but the production takes on a whole new level. If you’re familiar with his music (or just listened to some of his old stuff after reading the statement above) then you already know that his production remains top notch. His distinct blend of singing and rapping have a distinct sound that permeates throughout his discography, but its in his latest album, NOIR, where he shines brightest. If Smino isn’t a name you’re already familiar with than you’ve been missing out on one of the most unique artists of the modern era. Yet among this flurry of new music is an album that stands to be among the best of the year, and nobody is talking about it. Big names from Ariana Grande to Metro Boomin seemed to have music just waiting to be released. It seems that the drought new releases has come to a close, as the past few days have bore witness to the release of multiple bodies of work.
